Johan van Konijnenburg

Johan van Konijnenburg (Schiedam, 1955) is a visual artist, writer, theatre maker and cultural initiator. He lives and works in Middelharnis.

For almost forty years, he has used art as a means to connect people with one another. Background, disability or social position are not the starting point; instead, the focus is on the person behind the story.

Over the years, he grew into a well-known figure in the cultural world of Voorne-Putten and Goeree-Overflakkee and well beyond. His exhibitions, art projects, theatre productions, lectures and social initiatives have attracted thousands of visitors and participants over the years. Around his work grew a very large and loyal group of people who have been following his activities with interest for many years.

Even at a young age, Johan questioned things that were taken for granted. It is not finding ready-made answers but continuing to investigate what moves people that still forms the core of his thinking. Philosophy became not a field of study for him, but a way of living. The sudden death of his brother during a trip through Australia, and shortly afterward the loss of his father, made him aware early on of the fragility of existence. Since then, transience, wonder and human solidarity have formed a recurring undercurrent in his work.

As an independent artist, Johan works mainly with oil paint and mixed media. His paintings are held in private collections in the Netherlands and abroad. Yet he never sees art as an endpoint. For him, painting is above all a way to make thoughts visible and to get people thinking. He passed on his love of art to others early on. From the late 1970s onward, he taught art lessons to children and young people, introducing generations of schoolchildren to drawing, painting and free thinking. At schools, together with hundreds of pupils, he realised large art projects in public spaces, giving art a literal place in the heart of society. Throughout his career, Johan developed numerous creative projects for people with intellectual, psychological and/or physical disabilities. He was instrumental in founding various art workshops and creative day-care projects, including 't Akcent in Brielle and later, as founder of Stichting Dogma in Hellevoetsluis. Places where it was not about the disability but about the person.

Under his guidance, many grew into artists who exhibited in town halls, museums and other public venues. In doing so, he made an important contribution to the recognition of art made by people who had rarely been given a platform.

Alongside his visual work, he wrote and directed theatre productions and designed sets for concerts, school musicals and large-scale open-air performances. Historic fortifications, harbours and public spaces regularly became impressive open-air stages under his direction, in which hundreds of volunteers, musicians and actors worked together. His social commitment was not limited to art. For decades, his studio was open to people seeking a listening ear, a safe place or a new direction in their lives. Through his foundation, since the early 1990s he has worked almost entirely without remuneration on projects for children, people in vulnerable circumstances and people with intellectual, psychological or physical disabilities. For Johan, creativity and sincere attention are inseparably connected.

For his long-standing commitment to art, culture and society, he received the Jan Blankenspeld in 2019, the highest municipal honour of the municipality of Hellevoetsluis. This recognised not only his artistic work but, above all, his social significance for the region.

After nearly forty years of working with people with disabilities, the need arose to write down the many remarkable encounters. Not as stories about disabilities or care, but about people. About humour, grief, friendship, love, loss and resilience. This resulted in his first novel, Ik ben sterk, based on true events.

His greatest satisfaction lies not in awards or pats on the back, but in the moment someone discovers that they are capable of more than they ever thought possible. Perhaps that is the common thread that best sums up his life. Art, philosophy and social engagement are not separate worlds for him, but different expressions of the same conviction: that every person matters and that creativity can bring people closer together.

Anyone who knows Johan knows that he likes to put life into perspective.
